President's Column

This is the last newsletter of the year. As you read on you will see there are quite a few new things we have accomplished and still things to look forward to.

The biggest news is that the executive committee of ASPRS has selected Denver as the venue for the 2004 ASPRS annual convention. As I reported in the summer newsletter we had already submitted our proposal to host the conference but now we can plan to actually do it. This is good news for the region as it brings nationwide recognition of the importance of the Rocky Mountain West to the photogrammetric and remote sensing industry. The bad news is that we have a lot of work ahead of us to plan for such as large event. I appeal now to the active ASPRS members throughout our four-state region to offer their support, in whatever way, to make this a very successful meeting. The ASPRS-RMR board is especially seeking volunteers to assist in the planning stages of the convention. This will probably include planning the structure and format of the convention, and promotion and event planning. This will be a good opportunity for you to participate in ASPRS activities at a national level, network with fellow members in your profession, and receive the gratification of volunteering for a prestigious show.

As I have mentioned before in past newsletters, we welcome any active members in the Rocky Mountain Region to join in with the regional board of directors to assist in development of ASPRS. There is plenty of opportunity to take part in the planning of our annual GIS in the Rockies conference and, of course, the ASPRS annual convention in 2004.

I will summarize the recent events in our region. We had a very successful GIS in the Rockies conference this September together with ACSM, GITA, URISA, and PLSC. It was one of the most attended we have ever held. This year's subject matter tracks were well focused on the needs of the audience and were very much in tune with the latest developments in GIS and GIS-related professions. We also had a significant number of commercial and government exhibitors. Without their generous support, the conference would not be as great. The one technical tour we held this year to Jeppesen Sanderson, Inc. was also a tremendous success. The tour booked up early to the maximum allowable. The tour was very informative and the feedback from the ASPRS members was very positive.

Our web site continues to evolve in the right direction. The structure is excellent but we still need more content. It should be noted that this site will benefit all of our region by communicating any noteworthy news that our members might want to share.

Finally, you will notice at the end of this newsletter an invitation to our annual meeting and dinner. This is the time to be serious and have fun at the same time. We will be swearing in our new board of directors for 2001 following election in December. Recounts are usually not necessary, as many positions are not contested! The socializing and fun begins in the dinner theatre and carries on into the night. Please note this event is open to all ASPRS members and their friends or family. We welcome you all and look forward to seeing you there.

Again, I would like to hear any comments, complaints, or queries that you may have on anything that concerns our ASPRS region in 2000 and look forward to assisting you in any way I can. Thanks for your loyal support of ASPRS.

EarthWatch Announces QuickBird I Satellite a Loss

EarthWatch Incorporated announced on November 21, 2000 the loss of the QuickBird 1 remote sensing satellite. The announcement follows a launch failure of the 1-meter resolution commercial imaging satellite on November 20 (GMT), 2000 from Plesetsk, Russia. Initial indications are that the QuickBird 1 failed to achieve its proper orbit. EarthWatch President and Chief Executive Officer, Herb Satterlee, stated, "The loss of QuickBird 1 is a great disappointment not just to EarthWatch, but to customers worldwide who are eager to receive high-resolution commercial imagery from EarthWatch. EarthWatch is currently reviewing a range of options to determine what is in the best interest of their stakeholders. We will provide more information when it becomes available."

Annual Dinner Meeting to be Jan. 27

Mark your calendars for our annual dinner and installation of officers for Saturday, January 27, 2001. Your Board of Directors has decided to be adventurous and try a new venue this time: Jester's Dinner Theatre and School for the Performing Arts in Longmont. The seating arrangements at Jester's allow our entire group to sit together for dinner and the show, which is something that has been lacking in other theaters. The show will be "Nuncrackers," a comedy. Dinner is a sit-down service with entree choices including Chicken Cordon Bleu, Lemon Pepper Cod, Turkey & Dressing, and Prime Rib. The theater also offers appetizers, dessert, and a full bar. It's always a very entertaining evening, so why not plan to join us? Mark your calendars now for this fun event!! The form for ordering tickets is on the web at http://www.asprs-rmr.org/news.html

"Surveying for GIS Users" Course

More info: Paul Suter at 303-694-9232 or sutercomm@aol.com

The Surveying and Mapping Degree Program, headed by Dr. Herbert W. Stoughton, at Metropolitan State College of Denver (MSCD), is pleased to announce that it will provide a Fundamentals of Surveying for GIS Users course. This study opportunity will be available to interested persons who are not surveying majors. The course will be offered beginning with the start of the Spring semester in January 2001.

"A course similar to this is difficult to find, and yet very needed within the industry," said Dr. Stoughton. "It will instruct students about fundamental surveying and mapping methods applicable for GIS use which are employed to collect field data for inclusion in GIS databases."

The course will include five areas of study:

  • Field Measurements
  • Computations
  • Analyzation of Measurements and Calculations
  • Development of Cadastre Maps
  • Coordinate Systems

The Surveying and Mapping Degree Program at MSCD is supported by the Professional Land Surveyors of Colorado. Since 1997, Program enrollment has increased by 150 percent.
